High Adventure Camps Committee

The High Adventure Team is here to help you unlock Scouting's adventure

The High Adventure Camps Committee purpose is to promote and nurture the participation and interaction by Grand Canyon Council Scouts and Adults at BSA High Adventure Bases and Camps for backcountry treks, other outdoor experiences, trainings and personal enrichment.

Committee Goals

  • Support an annual GCC contingent to Philmont Scout Ranch due to its proximity to Arizona for a minimum of a 7-day, or 12-day, back country trek.
  • Promote the active participation of adult scouters in participating in training programs offered at the Philmont Training Center, including how to earn the Philmont Masters Track Award.
  • Support an annual alternative contingent on a rotating basis to the high adventure camps at Florida Sea Base, Northern Tier, and the Bechtel Summit. This would offer a diversity of high adventure base experiences to scouts and adults.
  • Sponsor and hold an annual committee event to market, and provide, information and updates to the GCC units on BSA High Adventure Bases and how to effectively plan and carry out a unit sponsored trip. Such an event would provide information on the camps, strategies to plan and discussions of cost and other questions, including various Awards such as the Triple Crown and Grand Slam of High Adventure Awards.
  • Make speakers available to District Roundtables and local units to promote the various BSA High Adventure Camps and how to plan and execute a successful trip.

High Adventure Bases

Philmont Ranch

Northwest New Mexico

Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America’s premier High Adventure™ base, challenges Scouts and Venturers with more than 214 square miles of rugged northern New Mexico wilderness. Backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience this legendary country.

Sea Base

Florida Keys

Sea Base is a unique Scouting program that offers aquatics programs found nowhere else. Whether your interests lie in sailing, scuba diving, rustic camping on an undeveloped barrier island, fishing or a combination of all, this is the place for your Troop, Team, Crew, Sea Ship or Explorer Post. Sea Base serves around 16,000 participants annually.

Bechtel Summit

West Virginia

Situated in the wilds of West Virginia, The Summit is a training, Scouting, and adventure center for the millions of youth and adults involved in the Boy Scouts of America and anyone who loves the outdoors. The Summit Bechtel Reserve is also home to the National Scout Jamboree and the Paul R. Christen National High Adventure Base.

Northern Tier

Northern Minnesota

Northern Tier is the Boy Scouts of America’s gateway to adventure in the Great Northwoods. In the summer, Scouts from Northern Tier’s three wilderness canoe bases explore millions of acres of pristine lakes, meandering rivers, dense forests and wetlands in Northern Minnesota, Northwest Ontario and Northeast Manitoba.
