The Arizona Council of Trout Unlimited received a $2,500 grant through the Trout Unlimited national “Embrace a Stream” grant program. AZTU will be investing this grant into the R-C Scout Ranch fishing pond and Christopher Creek, which flows through R-C Scout Ranch into Box Canyon. The program aims to improve cold water stream flows by habitat enhancements and to restore the populations of the native Gila trout.
AZTU will build rock and log barbs, improve public access to Christopher Creek, improve the youth fishing pond at R-C Scout Ranch by draining, dredging, and removing cat tails, adding spawning beds, and refilling the pond with plant features that benefit the trout and other native species.
Scouting youth attending R-C Cub Scout Resident Family Camp, or the Camp Geronimo Fish Camp, will be able to benefit from the Grand Canyon Council fishing programs offered as a part of the summer 2021 programs. In 2020, Camp Geronimo hosted its inaugural Fish Camp, where twelve Scouts were able to fish at a variety of locations around the state, learned about soil and water conservation (including Leave No Trace), fishing first aid, fish anatomy and dissection, night fishing, and plenty of meals including freshly caught fish!
Cub Scouts may enjoy fishing with their family and unit at the Cub Scout Resident Family Camp programs at R-C Scout Ranch throughout any number of sessions in June 2021. Additional program features include horseback riding, bb guns, archery, crafts, and much more! 2021 will feature specialty sessions with additional program focus, including Equestrian camp, STEM, and Webelos sessions. Dates, program details, and registration information may be found at https://r-cscoutranch.org/summer-camps/.
Scouts BSA and other older youth programs, for Scouts ages 13 and above, will be able to participate in Fish Camp during the first three week-long sessions, beginning May 30, June 6, and June 13. Participant spaces are limited to 12 Scouts per session, and are expected to sell out; if you would like to participate, please be sure to register as soon as possible!
