Ponderosa Shooting Sports Competition Recap
Thank you for the help with the shotguns for the shooting competition! We had 142 participants across 9 troops registered for the two-day event On October 24-25.
The first day included the Wainwright Troop vs Troop Competition with Troop 7033 winning for Archery, the combined Troop of 7134/7039 won for shotgun, and Troop 7036 winning rifle.
Saturday evening included a campfire program (by lantern) with excellent skits, songs, and magic provided by Pack leader and professional magician Chris Rose, who was attending the BALOO training at Camp Raymond which was happening at the same time as the shooting competition!
The second day was the individual competition with almost every Troop having at least one Scout win a category. Scouts were divided by age groups (11-13, 14-15, 16-20) in each of the events (Archery, Rifle, Shotgun). The Scouts that were in the top ten in each of the three events were invited to Top Shot. It was tough competition with only three Scouts qualifying. After shooting a special round on the rifle range in 30mph winds, Caleb M. of Troop 7039 was announced as the Top Shot winner!
The event fundraised support for Council programs, allowed for Scouts’ enjoyment of Camp Raymond, and most importantly introduced many Scouts to their first shots on shotgun and rifle! Ranger Rick noted he didn’t see anything less than a smile on all faces when they left. These scouts are dying to do something other than sit on Zoom classroom meetings and one scout remarked “I forgot there was COVID!”
We had an amazing time and we hope you will join us for April’s Route 66 Shooting Competition and next Fall’s Wainwright Shooting Competition at Camp Raymond.
Thank you Scouts and Scouters,
