Weekly COVID-19 Impact Update | April 6, 2020
Grand Canyon Scouters,
Howdy and Happy Monday! We are finishing our first week following the Governor’s Stay at Home order with all offices completely closed and all employees working from home. We had a few bugs early, but it looks like it’s working out well for everyone!
As a reminder, all staff are available via their normal office phone numbers. All employees also have computers and access to council databases and systems so we don’t miss a beat during this time.
As of now, all summer camps are ‘a-go’.
The safety of our Scouts, leaders, and camp staff are our biggest priority and we also realize many are looking forward to spending time at camp this summer.
At this point, based on currently available information from AZDHS and CDC, we are planning on operating all summer camping programs (Scouts BSA Summer Camp, our Cub Scout summer programs, and NYLT). We continue to monitor the situation daily and will communicate any changes that may occur as soon as decisions are made.
As many families are facing economic challenges right now, we remind parents and leaders that camperships are available for our Scouts who are attending Grand Canyon Council programs. The application and instructions are available online.
Virtual Unit Meetings
Kudos to Scouts BSA Troop 41 (among many) for using video conferencing software to continue their Scouting program! Recently AZ Family3 ran a piece on their virtual Scouting during this time.
Zoom and many other technologies are available, often for free, that can be used by unit committees, patrols, dens, or any group of Scouters to continue working on program and program planning for our Scouts. There are many resources online and we are sharing them on our social media where we find them.
Scouting at Home
On our last Roundtable night, all districts offered their programming via Zoom and we had the largest attendance across the council that we’ve seen in quite some time. Somewhere between the intersection of convenience (participate from home!) and Netflix boredom (I know, we’re all working, not working through our Netflix queue!) we had plenty of leaders hungry for interaction with other Scouters.
Even after this COVID-19 situation passes we plan to continue offering Roundtable and other district meetings through technology for remote participants.
Remember to look after yourselves and your loved ones. Continue to monitor recommendations from local public health officials and remember to wash your hands.
As we close out this weekly COVID-19 update, if you’ve not had an opportunity to contribute to Friends of Scouting or make an Arizona Tax Credit Contribution, please go https://www.grandcanyonbsa.org/support-scouting/ to make a contribution. These contributions fund Scouting in our council – they do not leave our local council and our budget is overseen by our all-volunteer Executive Board.
We’ll plan on another update in the next week or so.
